John Upton, filmmaker better known to most for the work he did with Romanian orphans. To some he was a hero, and to some he was an inspiration and bold. To most orphans he was better known as Johnny.
In 1993, ABC News 20/20 followed his story to Romania to see his work.
What was supposed to be a six month journey turned into a six year Odyssey.
Take me to America, a 20/20 special on Romanian orphans and the personal crusade of John Upton who was determent to save as many lives as he could.
John Upton did bring a lot of kids over and because of his efforts many got to celebrate a new life and lived even longer they some might have been able to. I remember the time where he sat me on his lap and asked if I wanted to play soccer like all the American kids.
He did a lot of good things and because of him, finding me a good family I am forever grateful to him for that. I am so glad that when we met up I was able to tell him that.
Today on March 29, 2013, we find out that John Upton's life was taken from him as he was shot.
A member of the press tells us that just three hours before John's life was taken his mother had passed away.
I am so sorry for the loss and the family and friends close to him that are going through this hard time. I was really shocked to hear the news and hard to believe that someone wanted to kill him.
